The Black Rider is a very fun album. Listening to it, you realize that it is actually quite an unpleasant sound. Which means that - by embracing ugly art - I am more fashionable than you.

The thing about the Black Rider is that it's sort of goofier than a lot of his other albums, which gives the ugliness a special charm. I'd argue the same thing for "That Feel" off of Bone Machine, too.
I'd argue that the presentational element has been a key aspect of everything post-Swordfishtrombones, and even much of the earlier stuff. Dude does some heavy theatrical music. Black Rider, though, does play up the goofy, which makes for sort of an overblown supernatural thrill ride album. I can totally dig that.
